If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you know that I started out mom life as a stay-at-home mom. I had four kids in less than three years. They are my world. In many ways, I still consider myself a stay-at-home mom. But sometimes life has a way of surprising you.  The unexpected blessing of this blog and my online fitness business have resulted in me working part-time, and I truly feel like I’ve found my sweet spot. I get to enjoy this stage of life with my kids while they’re little, and I also have an outlet to use the skills and abilities I’ve been given in a different capacity.

It’s been an incredible journey, but it hasn’t come without bumps in the road. After being a stay-at-home mom for four years, it took some time for our family to adjust to me not being available 24/7. I’ve felt all the emotions, from guilt to resentment to stress to gratitude. Within the last few months I feel like I’ve finally started to find my groove, and while I certainly don’t have it all figured out (just ask my husband), I’m excited to share a few things that have helped me to find balance.

Before I get started, I want to give a big shout out to Dell, who graciously offered to sponsor this post. They believe in supporting moms by giving them tools to get things done efficiently. In a world where mom life can get lost in the mix, I’m extremely grateful that Dell has made it a priority to create products that cater to busy families!

5 Tips For Finding Balance As A Work-At-Home Mom

1. Set official work hours. When you run an online business or really have a business of any kind, it’s tough to turn it off. There’s always something you could be doing. I’ll get an email from a client and immediately feel like I have to respond. I’ll get a text message and my phone feels like it’s screaming at me to text back ASAP. I heard a quote recently that went something like this: “Be sure you are disappointing the right people.” Wow. It’s so easy for me to say my priority is my family, but when it comes right down to it, I can easily let them play second fiddle to my work. So, I try to have specific hours every week when I get my work done and block them out. Communicating those hours to my husband and making sure we’re on the same page is important so he can hold me accountable and tell me to shut it off.

2. Turn off phone notifications. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made was to turn off social media notifications on my phone. There are two reasons for this. First of all, notifications were hijacking my day. I wasn’t able to stick to my “work hours.” So first and foremost, turning off notifications helps me to stay in the moment. Second of all, my clients and readers are taken care of better when I turned off notifications. Why? Because now I only check them when I have time to respond. Before, I’d see an email, then my baby would scream, and I’d forget to come back to it. I know turning off notifications feels like a big deal, but it will CHANGE your life for all the right reasons.

3. Find reliable childcare. For the longest time we didn’t have childcare. I worked early in the morning, during nap time (assuming they actually slept), sometimes after they’d go to bed and whenever else I could squeeze it in. When you’re starting up a business and don’t have much cash coming in, sometime’s that’s the only option. However, as soon as I started to make money, I reinvested it into my business in the form of child care. I was really nervous about this. In fact, it took me a few months to actually pull the trigger because I felt guilty. Should I really give up time with my kids? Is it bad that I want to work? Will I miss out on some of life’s most important moments? What I realized, though, was that when I was home and trying to take care of them and work at the same time, I was already missing out on those moments. I was distracted and stressed, always feeling half there and half somewhere else.

We hired a nanny part-time, and overnight things went smoother. I could work knowing that someone’s full attention was on my kids. When I was at work, I was at work. When I was home, I was home. My attention wasn’t split anymore, and my income more than doubled within a couple months of hiring her.

4. Revisit your “why” weekly. I chose to start working part-time because I felt something deep in my soul telling me to. I started this blog out of a desire for other moms to know that they aren’t alone. I feel most alive when I’m encouraging someone else, which is why the online personal training field was a great fit as well. However, with any job, there are always going to be those days when we question if we should be doing what we’re doing. When we hit road blocks or discouragements along the way, it’s so important to remember why we started in the first place. I make it a point to circle back to my mission and vision statements weekly so that I can truly serve my readers and fitness clients from the most sincere place in my heart. This also helps me to get rid of mom guilt because I know that what I’m doing has purpose.

5. Constantly evaluate the emotional state of your family. I feel like I can always tell whether or not I’m working too much by taking a good look at the moods of my kids and husband. When I feel balanced, they feel balanced and cared for. When I’m working too much, they feel that too, and those are often the weeks when they cry more and act out more, because we haven’t had enough time together. Those are also the weeks when Jake and I have those tough conversations about how I need to work on having more balance. Having open communication about how it’s going is key.

6. Use efficient tools to get your work done. When I was starting out, I used a half-broken computer. I spent so much time rebooting it, and waiting for it to unfreeze. I also had a phone that didn’t have enough storage so I always found myself wasting time deleting pictures so I could get my tasks done! Another trick I’ve learned to keep from being distracted is to not have all my emails go to my phone, which is why its important to have a computer I can rely on. When Dell sent me this XPS 13 laptop, I knew it was going to be the perfect fit for our family. I work from home or a coffee shop most of the time and am constantly on the go. This laptop is the smallest 13 inch laptop on the planet, so it’s super mobile. It came with an awesome case too so I can keep it protected from tiny fingers.

Screen Shot 2016-01-21 at 12.32.10 PM

It’s the world’s first and only laptop with InfinityEdge display, meaning that it’s a 13 inch laptop in an 11 inch form because it uses the whole screen! The first reaction I had when I opened it was, “This screen is huge!” It also has the longest battery life of any 13 inch laptop, getting 18 hours of run time on a single charge. Another feature I really like is that it has an Intel 6th generation core i7 processor which means it’s speed is fast enough to keep up with the millions of things I’m trying to multitask. The touch screen is also a huge plus! I’ve never had a computer with a touch screen before but it comes in so handy, especially when I need to sign e-documents and such.

My husband has also been using it as he’s gearing up to start a real estate business. He’s love it as well, and we both agree that we’ll definitely be going back to Dell the next time we need another laptop.

What isn’t to love about this? Battery life, speed and a photo editing software would be my main things! 🙂

Running my blog AND working as an independent contractor for a worldwide company, my biggest thing is being able to actually get my work done when I’m sitting down to get my work done! My laptop freezes every 2 minutes it seems, so the fast boot feature and core processor being so efficient and quick would save my life! And my sanity.

I love that it is so slim but Dell has maximized the screen space! I hate feeling like everything is squeezed onto the computer screen! Doesn’t that saying go, “great things come in small packages?”

I love so many things about this laptop!! The one that stands out most to me is the gorilla glass screen! My boys always find a way to get their little hands on my electronics and often end up dropping them! I work from home as well, and your tips are really encouraging. I have noticed my “screen” time has been taking over my family life so turning off notifications would be SOO good for me!! I often feel so guilty when I hear those beeps and can’t help but check what they’re about! I’ve also been working on setting specific working hours so I can separate family time from work time. If they mesh too much it feels overwhelming! Thanks for your wonderful posts, they are always just what I need! 🙂

I would appreciate so much about this laptop! The battery life, the scratch proof screen, the capability to have many applications running at once, being QUICK! I also work from home most of the time. I have two boys, 1 and 2 and another boy on the way. It would be awesome to have a reliable computer for communication, updating the website, doing our newsletter, and staying organized! I keep most things hand written still these days bc my laptop can be very unreliable!

  50. avatar
    Heather says:

The backlit keyboard, and large screen but a more compact body would be so nice! I currently have a 17″ computer for screen size to see spreadsheets, or put pdfs side by side for my work from home. My laptop is BIG and HEAVY. I love Dell products and will absolutely be looking at this for our purchase this fiscal year.

  73. avatar
    Alyssa Heath says:

I love the portability, so perfect for on the go! And the charge – 18 HOURS!!!! Sounds amazing, because remembering to plug it in amongst taking care of 2 littles ones, is not a skill of mine!

  74. avatar
    Breana says:

I would absolutely love the speed and convenience of this lap top! It makes me excited just reading how wonderful it is! Haha! I’m a full-time working mom as well as a full time online college student… I made the decision to swap from HP to Dell about 6 months ago and have not been impressed with my Dell 🙁 It has not been helpful in juggling these two things. I’ve always seen such great reviews of Dell… I think I must have just gotten the wrong one! It’s quite big and may not have as fast of a processor as this one. Anyway, I absolutely LOVE reading your blogs!! You’ve helped me find ways to juggle so many things with your blogs! Thank you!!

  75. avatar
    Brooke says:

I love this post. So timely- especially the part about hiring a nanny. Been putting that off but it’s time!
Love the tiny-ness of the computer! So key!

I would love the 18 hour battery life for all the times I forget to plug in the charger! As well as the backlit keyboard!

  77. avatar

I love the touch screen and scratch proof! My first grader and kindergartner have homework on the computer and these features would be awesome!!

  78. avatar

I have an online business and my computer is just like your blog described, I spend more time waiting and rebooting it than I can getting work done. My phone is also reached its max on storage so I can’t do anything on it. I love that the XP 13 has 5.7 million megapixels for a beautiful picture and also that it’s scratch resistant, with 2 little ones that a major plus!

  79. avatar
    DeAnna Coffman says:

I would love this laptop because of its processing speed! Being efficient is so important to maximizing work output to balance home/work life. I like to get things done! The touch screen seems like an awesome feature too.

  84. avatar
    Hilary Parrish says:

Ooh, touch screen! That is so fancy! Clearly my current laptop is 10 years old, and I’m in desperate need of an upgrade! Mostly, like you said, it would be fantastic not to spend half of my “computer time” booting the darn thing up and then inevitably restarting when it glitches out!

  85. avatar
    Jenna Simanton says:

I love how portable this laptop would be. I am also a work at home Mom and love all aspects of this article! Thanks for sharing!

  86. avatar
    Stephanie says:

Thank you for this blog. I just found you on Facebook and am really enjoying your writing. I’m also a work at home mom and it has been a constant struggle to find the balance with my 2 kids, hubby and work life. I’m going to try setting specific hours and maybe a part time nanny, that would help a lot! I love the laptop you use! I think the best part is the long lasting battery because I hate being tethered by a cord and the huge screen because I have to look at multiple images at once to be most efficient at my job.

  87. avatar

I love the fact that it is slim enough to slip into your purse or diaper bag! I have recently began working at home part time, with two little ones for KA and cannot believe how much better I feel balancing my passion with motherhood!

  88. avatar

These tips are spot-on! I’ve been a part-time working-from-home mom for 10 years, and I can attest to the effectiveness of following these guidelines. There have been times of smooth sailing, and there have been times when I was desperate to quit my job. Looking back, I can attest that when times were bad it was always true that I was violating one or more of these rules. On the other hand, the times when my work and my family are in proper balance and functioning well have always been during seasons in which I am abiding by all of these guidelines. Thank you for this wonderful post!

I am currently in the market for a laptop, and I am especially eager to get an upgrade from the slow laptop I use today. Time is a valuable commodity for me as a mom, and it frustrates me to no end when my time is wasted by an inefficient computer. So, I’m especially interested in the processing capabilities of the XPS 13 laptop and will be looking into it as a possible replacement for my current model.

    Allison witt says:

I love that it’s so slim and lightweight! I don’t need any extra weight to carry around since I’ve always got my hands full. I’ve also been wanting a touchscreen laptop because it’s so much more convenient to use at most all times!

  90. avatar
    Brooke Persinger says:

I love that the screen is so large, but its still very slim! Also the longer battery life is definitely a huge plus! The touch screen is very cool too!

  91. avatar
    Angela Kirchner says:

I love the battery life! My phone is always dying, which is so frustrating! I’ve recently started an online business, this computer would be perfect.

  92. avatar
    Jess R says:

The size is such a HUGE factor for me. Too small it becomes hard to function, too big it becomes hard to transport. When your office can be anywhere in the world, this is so very important.

  93. avatar
    Danya Dahlin says:

As a mom of three small kiddo’s and a full time second grade teacher, I could really use this! The size and durability is very enticing! Thanks for the post!

  94. avatar
    Hailey says:

I would love the processor, which would be a big step up from the laptop we are currently getting by with! Ours can’t even hold a charge anymore – so I would also probably love the long battery life! 🙂

  95. avatar

I love that it is super portable but yet has a i7 processor!! Wow!!

  96. avatar

That gorilla glass is pretty slick- sounds incredibly durable for little hands and toys that may go a flying 🙂 I’m a fellow work-from-home Mama to a 9 month old and these tips are SO right on. Thanks for sharing!
